このように、私は聞いた。「これは私の母、これは私の祖母」と辿っていけば、その者の母や祖母の数が尽きる前に、閻浮提の草や木の枝や葉は残らず尽き果ててしまうであろう。それはなぜか。この輪廻には、知られたる始まりというものがない。無明に覆われ、渇愛に繋がれたまま流転輪廻する衆生の、最初の起点というものは見出されないのである。かくも長きにわたり、汝らは苦しみ、悩み、災難を受け続け、墓場を満たし続けてきた。これだけのことがあれば、汝らが厭離の心を起こすには、もはや十分であろう。
