At Sāvatthī. “Mendicants, there are these four elements. What four? The elements of earth, water, fire, and air. There are ascetics and brahmins who don’t truly understand these four elements’ gratification, drawback, and escape. I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight. 舎衛城にて。「比丘たちよ、四つの界があります。何が四つかといえば、地界・水界・火界・風界です。これら四界の味わい（味）・患い（過患）・出離を、あるがままに知らない沙門・婆羅門がいます。私はそのような者たちを、真の沙門・婆羅門とは認めません。かの尊者たちは、沙門あるいは婆羅門としての生の目的を証得せず、また自らの智慧によってそれを現証して住することもないのです。これら四界の味わい・患い・出離を、あるがままに知る沙門・婆羅門がいます。
