At Sāvatthī. “Mendicants, suppose a man was to draw up two or three drops of water from the ocean. What do you think, mendicants? Which is more: the two or three drops drawn out or the water in the ocean?” “Sir, the water in the ocean is certainly more. The two or three drops drawn out are tiny. Compared to the water in the ocean, it’s not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part.” “In the same way, for a noble disciple, the suffering that’s over and done with is more …”
舎衛城にて。「比丘たちよ、譬えば、ある人が大海より二、三滴の水を掬い取ったとしよう。比丘たちよ、汝らはいかに思うか。掬い取られた二、三滴の水と、大海に湛えられた水と、いずれが多いか。」「世尊よ、大海に湛えられた水こそ、遥かに多うございます。掬い取られた二、三滴の水は、極めて僅かなるものにございます。大海の水に比ぶれば、百分の一にも、千分の一にも、十万分の一にも及ばぬものでございます。」「同じように、聖なる弟子にとって、すでに滅し去られた苦しみの方が、遥かに多いのである……」
