At one time Venerable Sāriputta and Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita were staying near Varanasi, in the deer park at Isipatana. Then in the late afternoon, Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita came out of retreat, went to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Sāriputta: “Well, Reverend Sāriputta, are old age and death made by oneself? Or by another? あるとき、尊者サーリプッタと尊者マハーコッティタは、ヴァーラーナシーの近く、イシパタナの鹿野苑に滞在されていた。やがて日暮れ時、尊者マハーコッティタは静修より出でて尊者サーリプッタのもとへ赴き、ともに挨拶を交わされた。挨拶と礼儀にかなった言葉を交わし終えると、かたわらに座して、サーリプッタにこう申し上げた。「して、尊者サーリプッタよ、老死とは自らによって作られるものでありましょうか。それとも他によって作られるものでありましょうか。あるいは自と他の両者によって作られるものでありましょうか。それとも自によらず他によらず、偶然に生起するものでありましょうか」
