So I have heard. “But mendicant, how do you probe within?” Then that mendicant answered, but the Buddha was not happy with the answer. At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Kurus, near the Kuru town named Kammāsadamma. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, “Mendicants!” “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this: “Mendicants, do you probe within?” When he said this, one of the mendicants said to the Buddha, “Sir, I probe within.” There were ascetics and brahmins of
かくの如く、我れは聞けり。
あるとき、世尊はクル国のカンマーサダンマというクル族の町の近くに滞在しておられた。そこで世尊は比丘たちに呼びかけられた。「比丘たちよ。」「世尊よ」と彼らは答えた。世尊はこのように説かれた。「比丘たちよ、汝らは内省するか。」
このように仰せになると、一人の比丘が世尊に申し上げた。「尊師よ、私は内省いたしております。」
「しかし比丘よ、汝はいかにして内省するのか。」
するとその比丘は答えたが、世尊はその答えに満足されなかった。
