At Sāvatthī. Then the wanderer Timbaruka went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha: “Well, worthy Gotama, are pleasure and pain made by oneself?” “It’s not that there’s no such thing as pleasure and pain. 舎衛城にて。そのとき、遊行者ティンバルカは仏陀のもとへと赴き、挨拶を交わした。挨拶と礼儀ある言葉が終わると、彼は傍らに座して、仏陀にこう申し上げた。「して、尊者ゴータマよ、苦楽とは自ら作るものでございましょうか。」「苦楽というものが存在しないわけではない。苦楽は確かに実在する。」「さすれば、尊者ゴータマは苦を知らず、見ておられないのでございましょうか。」「私が苦楽を知らず、見ていないというわけではない。私は苦楽を知り、苦楽を見ている。」
