At Sāvatthī. name and form … consciousness … They don’t understand choices, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation. I don’t deem them as true ascetics and brahmins. Those venerables don’t realize the goal of life as an ascetic or brahmin, and don’t live having realized it with their own insight. “Mendicants, there are ascetics and brahmins who don’t understand old age and death, their origin, their cessation, and the practice that leads to their cessation.
舎衛城にて。名色……識……彼らは行を、その起源を、その滅を、そして滅へと導く道を了知せず。我はかかる者どもを真の沙門・婆羅門とは認めぬ。これらの尊者たちは沙門・婆羅門としての生の目的を実現せず、また自らの智慧によってそれを実現して住することもない。「比丘たちよ、老死を、その起源を、その滅を、そして滅へと導く道を了知せぬ沙門・婆羅門がいる。
