At one time Venerable Mahākassapa was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. There he addressed the mendicants: “Reverends, mendicants!” “Reverend,” they replied. 或る時、尊者マハーカッサパは、王舎城の近く、竹林の栗鼠餌場に滞在しておられた。そこで彼は比丘たちに呼びかけられた。「友よ、比丘たちよ。」「友よ」と彼らは答えた。尊者マハーカッサパはこのように仰せられた。「この尊者は貪欲にして、しばしば貪欲に満ちた心をもって住している。貪欲に満ちているということは、如来によって説かれた法と律における衰退を意味する。この尊者は瞋恚あり……惛沈・睡眠あり……掉挙あり……疑惑あり……この尊者は……」
