At one time Venerable Sāriputta was staying in the land of the Magadhans near the little village of Nālaka. Then the wanderer Sāmaṇḍakāni went up to Venerable Sāriputta and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, Sāmaṇḍakāni sat down to one side, and said to Sāriputta: “Reverend Sāriputta, what is happiness and what is suffering?” “Rebirth is suffering, reverend, no rebirth is happiness. あるとき、尊者サーリプッタはマガダ国のナーラカという小さな村の近くに滞在しておられた。そこへ遍歴行者サーマンダカーニが尊者サーリプッタのもとへやって来て、互いに挨拶を交わした。挨拶と丁寧な言葉を交わし終えると、サーマンダカーニは傍らに座し、サーリプッタに向かってこう申した。「友よ、サーリプッタよ、苦とは何であり、楽とは何でありましょうか。」「友よ、再生（輪廻）は苦であり、再生なきことが楽であります。再生がある限り、このような苦を免れることはできないのです。
