“Mendicants, it is said that no prior point of craving for continued existence is evident, before which there was no craving for continued existence, and afterwards it came to be. And yet it is evident that there is a specific condition for craving for continued existence. I say that craving for continued existence is fueled by something, it’s not unfueled. 比丘たちよ、有愛（ゆうあい）に先立つ始点というものは知られていない。かつては有愛が存在せず、その後に有愛が生じてきた、というその以前の時点が明らかでないのである。しかしながら、有愛には特定の縁（えん）があることは明らかである。我は説く——有愛には食（じき）があり、食なきにあらずと。我は説く——三種の悪行には食があり、食なきにあらずと。では、三種の悪行の食とは何であるか。
