“Mendicants, the Saṅgha may, if it wishes, turn the bowl upside down for a lay follower on eight grounds. What eight? They try to prevent the mendicants from getting material things. They try to harm mendicants. They try to drive mendicants from a monastery. They insult and abuse mendicants. They divide mendicants against each other. 「比丘たちよ、八つの事由があるならば、僧伽は望むところに従い、在家信者に対して鉢を伏せることができる。その八つとは何か。彼らが比丘たちへの物資の供与を妨げようとするとき。彼らが比丘たちに害を与えようとするとき。彼らが比丘たちを精舎より追い出そうとするとき。彼らが比丘たちを罵倒し、侮辱するとき。彼らが比丘たちの間に不和を生じさせようとするとき。彼らが仏・法・僧を誹謗するとき。比丘たちよ、これら八つの事由があるならば、僧伽は望むところに従い、在家信者に対して鉢を伏せることができる。僧伽は——」
