“Mendicants, there are these eight assemblies. And when my Dhamma talk was finished I vanished. But when I vanished they didn’t know: ‘Who was that who vanished? Was it a god or a human?’ What eight? The assemblies of aristocrats, brahmins, householders, and ascetics. An assembly of the gods of the four great kings. An assembly of the gods of the thirty-three. An assembly of Māras. 比丘たちよ、八つの集会というものがある。そして、私が法話を終えると、私は姿を消した。しかし、私が姿を消しても、彼らは知ることがなかった。「姿を消したのは誰か。それは神であったか、それとも人間であったか」と。
八つとは何か。刹帝利の集会、婆羅門の集会、居士の集会、沙門の集会。四大王衆天の集会。三十三天の集会。魔羅の集会。諸天の集会、これらである。
私は幾百もの刹帝利よりなる集会に赴いたことを憶念する。そこにおいて、私はともに坐し……
