Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.” “This is exactly how some futile people ask me for something. 時に一人の比丘が世尊のもとに近づき、礼拝して一方に坐し、こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、どうか世尊は私に、簡略にして法を説いてくださいますように。私はその法を聞いたならば、独り離れ、遠離し、精進し、熱心に、決意を固めて住むことでしょう。」
「まさにそのように、一部の愚かな者どもは私に何かを求めてくる。しかるに法が説き示されると、彼らはただ私のあとをついて回ることばかりを考えるのだ。」
「世尊よ、どうか世尊は私に、簡略にして法を説いてくださいますように。善逝よ、どうか法を簡略に説いてくださいますように。願わくは私がその意味を理解できますように。」
