“Mendicants, the observance of the sabbath with its eight factors is very fruitful and beneficial and dazzling and bountiful. And how should it be observed? It’s when a noble disciple reflects: ‘As long as they live, the perfected ones give up killing living creatures, renouncing the rod and the sword. They are scrupulous and kind, and live full of sympathy for all living beings. I, too, for this day and night will give up killing living creatures, renouncing the rod and the sword. I’ll be scrup
比丘たちよ、八つの徳目を具えた布薩は、甚だ大いなる果報をもたらし、甚だ大いなる功徳をもたらし、甚だ大いなる輝きを放ち、甚だ広大に遍く及ぶものである。では、いかにして布薩を行ずるべきか。ここに聖なる弟子がかく思惟するのである。「阿羅漢たちは、命ある限り、生きとし生けるものを殺すことを離れ、杖と刀剣を捨て置いている。彼らは慎み深く慈しみに満ちて、一切の生きとし生けるものに対して憐愍の心を抱きつつ住している。我もまた、この一日一夜の間、生きとし生けるものを殺すことを離れ、杖と刀剣を捨て置こう。我は慎み深く慈しみに満ちて……」
