At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Bhaggas at Crocodile’s Bellow, in the deer park at Bhesakaḷā’s Wood. 或る時、世尊はバッガ国のワニの吼ゆる地、ベーサカラーの林の鹿野苑に滞在しておられた。「これは智慧ある者のための法にして、智慧なき者のためのものにあらず。」その頃、尊者アヌルッダはチェーティー国の東棟堂の園に滞在しておられた。時にアヌルッダが独居閑寂の中に瞑想しておられると、その御心にかくの如き思念が生じた。「この法は少欲なる者のためのものにして、多欲なる者のためのものにあらず。知足なる者のためのものにして、知足せざる者のためのものにあらず。遠離を楽しむ者のためのものにして、遠離を楽しまざる者のため――」
