“Mendicants, there are these eight stains. Worse than any of these is ignorance, the worst stain of all. These are the eight stains. What eight? Not rehearsing is the stain of hymns. Neglect is the stain of houses. Laziness is the stain of beauty. Negligence is a guard’s stain. Misconduct is a woman’s stain. Stinginess is a giver’s stain. 「比丘たちよ、これら八つの垢がある。そのいずれよりも劣るものは、無明であり、これこそあらゆる垢の中で最も重き垢である。
では、八つの垢とは何か。誦せざることは偈頌の垢なり。怠慢は家屋の垢なり。懈怠は容姿の垢なり。放逸は守護者の垢なり。邪行は女人の垢なり。慳貪は施者の垢なり。悪しき不善の法は、現世においても来世においても垢となる。
誦せざることは偈頌の垢、怠慢は家屋の垢、懈怠は容姿の垢——」
