So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in Verañjā at the root of a neem tree dedicated to Naḷeru. Then the brahmin Verañja went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha: “Worthy Gotama is immature.” “There is, brahmin, a sense in which you could rightly say that I’m immature. かくのごとく、我れは聞けり。ある時、世尊はヴェランジャーにおいて、ナルェルに捧げられたニームの樹のもとに留まり給えり。その時、バラモンのヴェランジャーは世尊のもとへと参り、世尊と挨拶を交わしたり。挨拶と礼儀にかなう言葉が交わされ終わりて後、彼は一方の側に座し、世尊に向かいてかく申し上げたり。「尊き瞿曇は未熟にあらせられる」と。世尊は仰せられたり。「バラモンよ、そなたが我れを未熟と称するに、ある意味においては正しかるべき場合もあろう。我れは、未来の母胎を捨て、新たなる生存への再生を捨てたる者こそを、未熟の者と称するのである」と。
