“Mendicants, you could rightly call Nanda ‘Gentleman’, ‘strong’, ‘lovely’, and ‘lustful’. How could he live the full and pure spiritual life unless he guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, is dedicated to wakefulness, and has mindfulness and situational awareness? 「比丘たちよ、難陀を『良家の子』『逞しい者』『美丈夫』『好色の者』と呼ぶことは、まことに正しいことである。しかして彼は、いかにして清浄にして完全なる梵行を保つことができるのであろうか。それは彼が根門を守護し、食において節度を保ち、覚醒に専心し、正念と正知を具えているからに他ならない。難陀の根門守護とは、かくのごときものである。彼が東方を見なければならぬとき、まず一心に念を凝らし、こう思惟してから見るのである。『東方を見るとき、貪欲と不快という悪しき不善の法が、わが心を』」
