“Mendicants, there are these five kinds of hard-heartedness. What five? Firstly, a mendicant has doubts about the Teacher. They’re uncertain, undecided, and lacking confidence. 「比丘たちよ、これら五種の頑なさがある。何が五つであるか。
まず第一に、比丘が師（仏陀）に対して疑いを抱き、不確かさのうちにあり、決意なく、信なき者となる場合である。かくある時、その心は熱意・献身・精進・努力へと向かうことなし。これが第一の頑なさである。
さらに、比丘が法（ダルマ）に対して疑いを抱く場合……僧伽（サンガ）に対して疑いを抱く場合……戒律（学処）に対して疑いを抱く場合……また、比丘が梵行の同伴者たちに対して怒りを抱き、心乱れ、恨みを懐き、心を閉ざす場合である。かくある時……」
