Then Doṇa the brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, Doṇa sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha: Having ensured his progeny through sex, his child makes him happy. Because of this attachment he stays in his family property, and does not go forth from the lay life to homelessness. As far as the line of the ancient brahmins extends, he doesn’t cross over it. 時に、バラモンのドーナは世尊のもとへと近づき、互いに挨拶を交わした。丁寧な挨拶と言葉を交わし終えて、ドーナは一方の傍らに座し、世尊にこう申し上げた。
「肉体の交わりによって子孫を儲け、その子がかれを喜ばせます。かくなる執着ゆえに、かれは家産に留まり、在家の生活を離れて出家することなく、無家の境地へと赴きません。古き時代のバラモンたちの系譜が及ぶ限り、かれはその範を踏み越えることなく守り続けます。かくゆえに、かれは規範に従うバラモンと呼ばれるのでございます。」
