“Mendicants, there are these five losses. What five? Loss of relatives, wealth, health, ethics, and view. It is not because of loss of relatives, wealth, or health that sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. It is because of loss of ethics or view that sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. These are the five losses. 比丘たちよ、五つの衰損がある。いかなる五つであるか。親族の衰損、財の衰損、健康の衰損、戒の衰損、見の衰損である。親族の衰損、財の衰損、あるいは健康の衰損によっては、衆生は身体の壊滅の後、死後において、苦処・悪趣・堕処・地獄に生まれ変わることはない。しかるに、戒の衰損あるいは見の衰損によってこそ、衆生は身体の壊滅の後、死後において、苦処・悪趣・堕処・地獄に生まれ変わるのである。これらが五つの衰損である。
