増支部経典（AN4.160）
“Mendicants, a Holy One or a Holy One’s training remain in the world for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of sympathy for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. Furthermore, the mendicants who are very learned—inheritors of the heritage, who have memorized the teachings, the monastic law, and the outlines—carefully make others recite the discourses. When they pass away, the discourses aren’t cut off at the root, and they have someone to preserve them.
比丘たちよ、聖者、あるいは聖者の修行にある者がこの世に存在することは、人々の利益と安楽のため、世を憐れむがゆえに、神々と人間の利益・福祉・安楽のためである。さらにまた、広く学び、法を受け継ぐ者、すなわち法・律・摩夷を暗誦し、それらを相続する比丘たちが、他者に経文を丁寧に誦持させる。彼らが世を去るとき、経文は根絶えることなく、これを護持する者が存在し続けるのである。
