“Mendicants, there are these four incredible and amazing things about a wheel-turning monarch. What four? If an assembly of aristocrats goes to see a wheel-turning monarch, they’re uplifted by seeing him and uplifted by hearing him speak. And when he falls silent, they’ve never had enough. If an assembly of brahmins … householders … or ascetics goes to see a wheel-turning monarch, they’re uplifted by seeing him and uplifted by hearing him speak. 比丘たちよ、転輪聖王には四つの不可思議にして希有なることがある。その四つとは何か。
刹帝利の集いが転輪聖王に謁見するとき、その御姿を拝することによって心は高揚し、その御言葉を聴くことによってまた高揚する。そして王が沈黙されるとき、彼らはいまだ飽くことがない。婆羅門の集いが……居士の集いが……あるいは沙門の集いが転輪聖王に謁見するとき、その御姿を拝することによって心は高揚し、その御言葉を聴くことによってまた高揚する。そして王が沈黙されるとき、彼らはいまだ飽くことがない。
