“Mendicants, there are these four incredible and amazing things about Ānanda. What four? If an assembly of monks goes to see Ānanda, they’re uplifted by seeing him and uplifted by hearing him speak. And when he falls silent, they’ve never had enough. If an assembly of nuns … laymen … or laywomen goes to see Ānanda, they’re uplifted by seeing him and uplifted by hearing him speak. And when he falls silent, they’ve never had enough. These are the four incredible and amazing things about Ānanda.”
「比丘たちよ、アーナンダには四つの不可思議にして希有なることがある。その四つとは何か。比丘の衆がアーナンダのもとを訪れるならば、その姿を目にして心が高められ、その説法を耳にして心が高められる。そしてアーナンダが沈黙するとき、衆はいまだ満ち足りることがない。比丘尼の衆が……優婆塞の衆が……あるいは優婆夷の衆がアーナンダのもとを訪れるならば、その姿を目にして心が高められ、その説法を耳にして心が高められる。そしてアーナンダが沈黙するとき、衆はいまだ満ち足りることがない。これらがアーナンダに具わる四つの不可思議にして希有なることである。」
