“Cattārome, bhikkhave, bhadrā assājānīyā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco bhadro assājānīyo patodacchāyaṁ disvā saṁvijjati saṁvegaṁ āpajjati: ‘kiṁ nu kho maṁ ajja assadammasārathi kāraṇaṁ kāressati, kimassāhaṁ paṭikaromī’ti. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco bhadro assājānīyo hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo bhadro assājānīyo santo saṁvijjamāno lokasmiṁ. “Mendicants, these four fine thoroughbreds are found in the world. What four? One fine thoroughbred is moved to act when it sees the shadow of the goad, thinking: ‘What task will the horse trainer have me do today? How should I respond?’ Some fine thoroughbreds are like that. 比丘たちよ、この世に四種の優れた駿馬が存在する。いかなる四種であるか。
ある優れた駿馬は、鞭の影を見ただけで動じ、「今日、馬丁は我に何をなさしめようとするのか。いかに応ずべきか」と思う。かくのごとき優れた駿馬が存在する。これが、この世に見出される第一の優れた駿馬である。
さらに、ある優れた駿馬は、鞭の影を見ても動じず、ただその毛を打たれて初めて動じ、「今日、馬丁は我に何をなさしめようとするのか」と思う。
