At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: “Sir, what is the cause, what is the reason why ladies don’t attend council meetings, work for a living, or travel to Persia?” “Ānanda, ladies are irritable, jealous, stingy, and unintelligent. This is the cause, this is the reason why ladies don’t attend council meetings, work for a living, or travel to Persia.”
あるとき、世尊はコーサンビーのゴーシタ園に滞在しておられた。そこへ尊者アーナンダが世尊のもとへ近づき、礼拝して傍らに座し、こう申し上げた。「世尊よ、いかなる因、いかなる縁によって、女人は集会に臨まず、生業に励まず、ペルシャへ渡航しないのでございましょうか。」「アーナンダよ、女人は瞋恚あり、嫉妬あり、慳貪あり、智慧なし。これが因であり、これが縁である。それゆえに、女人は集会に臨まず、生業に励まず、ペルシャへ渡航しないのである。」
