At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain, not long after Devadatta had left. There the Buddha spoke to the mendicants about Devadatta: “Possessions, honor, and popularity came to Devadatta for his own ruin and downfall. 時に世尊は、デーヴァダッタが去りて間もなき頃、ラージャガハの鷲の峰山に滞在しておられた。そこにて世尊は、デーヴァダッタについて比丘たちに説かれた。「利得と名誉と称讃とは、デーヴァダッタ自身の破滅と堕落のためにもたらされたのである。譬えば芭蕉の木も、竹も、葦も、みなその実を結ぶことが自らの破滅と堕落となるが如く……また譬えば騾馬も、懐妊することが自らの破滅と堕落となるが如く。かくの如く、利得と名誉と称讃とは、デーヴァダッタ自身の破滅と堕落のためにもたらされたのである。」
