Then Udāyī the brahmin went up to the Buddha, … and asked him, “Does the worthy Gotama praise sacrifice?” “Brahmin, I don’t praise all sacrifices. Nor do I criticize all sacrifices. … Take the kind of sacrifice where cattle, goats and sheep, chickens and pigs, and various kinds of animals are slaughtered. そののち、婆羅門ウダーイーは仏陀のもとへと参り、……こう問いかけた。「尊き瞿曇よ、あなたは祭祀を称讃なさるのでしょうか」と。
「婆羅門よ、我はすべての祭祀を称讃するわけではない。また、すべての祭祀を非難するわけでもない。……牛・山羊・羊・鶏・豚、およびさまざまな種類の動物が屠られるような祭祀については、我はそのような暴戻なる祭祀を称讃しない。しかしながら、牛・山羊・羊・鶏・豚、およびさまざまな種類の動物が屠られることのない祭祀については、我はそれを称讃する。
