“Mendicants, these four footprints of the Dhamma are primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. They are uncorrupted, as they have been since the beginning. They’re not being corrupted now nor will they be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins don’t look down on them. What four? Contentment, good will, right mindfulness, and right immersion. 「比丘たちよ、これら四つの法の足跡は、太古より存し、久遠より伝わり、古来の伝統に根ざし、いにしえよりのものである。それらは始まりの時よりそのままに、汚されることなく、今もって汚されておらず、またこれからも汚されることはないであろう。道理をわきまえた沙門・婆羅門たちは、これらを軽んじることがない。その四つとは何か。知足と、慈しみと、正念と、正定とである。これら四つの法の足跡は、太古より存し、久遠より伝わり、古来の伝統に根ざし、いにしえよりのものである。それらは始まりの時よりそのままに、汚されることなく、今もって汚されておらず、またこれからも汚されることはないであろう。」
