“Mendicants, this one time, when I was first awakened, I was staying in Uruvelā at the goatherd’s banyan tree on the bank of the Nerañjarā River. Then several old brahmins—elderly and senior, who were advanced in years and had reached the final stage of life—came up to me, and exchanged greetings with me. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side, and said to me: ‘Worthy Gotama, , we have heard this: “The ascetic Gotama does not bow to old brahmins, elderly
比丘たちよ、かつて私が初めて覚りを開いた折、ネーランジャラー河の畔、ウルヴェーラーの牧人の菩提樹のもとに滞在しておりました。そのとき、幾人かの老婆羅門たちが——老齢にして長老たる者どもが、年を重ね、人生の最後の段階に至った者どもが——私のもとへやって来て、私と挨拶を交わしました。挨拶と礼儀上の言葉が終わると、彼らは一方の脇に座り、私にこう申しました。「ゴータマ尊者よ、私どもはこのように聞き及んでおります。『沙門ゴータマは、老齢なる婆羅門たちに礼を示さず、年老いた者どもを……』」と。
