At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, at the monastery of the wanderers in the peacocks’ feeding ground. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, “Mendicants!” “Venerable sir,” they replied. 時に、世尊は王舎城の近く、孔雀の餌場にある遊行者たちの僧院に滞在しておられた。そこで世尊は比丘たちに呼びかけられた。「比丘たちよ。」「世尊よ」と彼らは答えた。世尊はかく説かれた。「比丘たちよ、三つの徳目を具える比丘は、究極の終着に達し、軛より究極の安穏に達し、究極の梵行に達し、究極の目標に達したる者である。彼は神々と人間のうちで最勝の者である。三つとは何か。有学の戒・定・慧の全域にわたる完成がそれである。
