“Mendicants, a hair blanket is said to be the worst kind of woven cloth. It’s cold in the cold, hot in the heat, ugly, smelly, and unpleasant to touch. In the same way, the teaching of the bamboo-staffed ascetic is said to be the worst of all the doctrines of the various ascetics and brahmins. 比丘たちよ、毛織りの毛布はあらゆる織物の中で最も劣るものと言われている。それは寒い時には寒く、暑い時には暑く、醜く、臭く、触れるに不快なものである。同じように、竹杖の沙門の教えは、あらゆる沙門・婆羅門の教説の中で最も劣るものと言われている。彼の教えとはこうである。かの竹杖の沙門、この空虚なる者は次のような教義と見解を持つ。しかるに彼は私に反論して言う。「業に力はなく、行為に力はなく、精進に力はない」と。「業に力はなく、行為に力はなく——」
