“Mendicants, there are three failures. What three? Failure in ethics, mind, and view. And what is failure in ethics? It’s when someone kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, and uses speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. This is called ‘failure in ethics’. And what is failure in mind? It’s when someone is covetous and malicious. This is called ‘failure in mind’. And what is failure in view? 比丘たちよ、三つの失敗がある。何が三つかといえば、戒における失敗、心における失敗、見における失敗である。
では、戒における失敗とは何か。ある者が生き物を殺し、盗みを働き、邪淫を犯し、また虚偽の言葉、離間の言葉、粗暴な言葉、無益な言葉を語ること、これを「戒の失敗」と呼ぶ。
では、心における失敗とは何か。ある者が貪欲であり、瞋恚を抱くこと、これを「心の失敗」と呼ぶ。
では、見における失敗とは何か。ある者が邪見を持ち、歪んだ見解を抱くこと、例えば「……
