At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Then a householder who was a disciple of the Ājīvaka ascetics went up to Venerable Ānanda, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to Ānanda: “Honorable Ānanda, whose teaching is well explained? Who in the world is practicing well? Who in the world has done well?” “Well then, householder, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like. What do you think, householder? かつて、尊者アーナンダはコーサンビーのゴーシタ精舎に滞在しておられた。そのとき、アージーヴィカ派の修行者を師と仰ぐある在家の信者が尊者アーナンダのもとへと参り、礼拝して一方の座に着き、こう申し上げた。「尊者アーナンダよ、いかなる者の教えが善く説かれたものと言えましょうか。この世において善く修行しているのは誰でしょうか。この世において善い行いをなしているのは誰でしょうか。」「さらば、在家の方よ、この問いをそのままあなたにお返し申しましょう。あなたのお考えのままにお答えください。在家の方よ、あなたはどのようにお考えでしょうか。教えを説く者たちの教えとは——」
