やがて、ある裕福なバラモンが仏陀のもとへ参り、傍らに座してこのように申し上げた。「尊き瞿曇よ、かつて老齢にして高徳なる、師の師たるバラモンたちより、このような言葉を聞き及んでおります。『往古の世においては、この世界は人々で満ち溢れ、まるで押し合うほどであった。村々、町々、そして都城は、鶏の飛び立つほどの距離にも満たないほど、互いに近く連なっていた』と。尊師よ、いかなる因縁によって、今日この世に人口は減じ、衰退の相が明らかに現れ、そして……」
