時に、バラモンのジャーヌッソーニは世尊のもとへ赴き、礼拝して一方に座し、世尊にこう申し上げた。「尊き方ゴータマよ、人々は『涅槃は現世において顕現する』と申します。いかなる意味において、涅槃は現世において顕現し、即時に効験をなし、来たりて見よと招き、己れに関わり、智ある者が各自みずから知ることができるのでしょうか。」「貪欲ある者は、貪りに打ち負かされ、みずからを害し、他者を害し、両者をともに害せんと意図する。そして心の苦痛と憂いを経験する。貪欲が滅し去られたならば——」
