“Once upon a time, mendicants, Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the thirty-three, spoke this verse: ‘Whoever wants to be like me would observe the sabbath complete in all eight factors, on the fourteenth and the fifteenth days, and the eighth day of the fortnight, as well as on the fortnightly special displays.’ But that verse was poorly sung by Sakka, lord of gods, not well sung; poorly spoken, not well spoken. かつて、比丘たちよ、神々の主たる帝釈天が、三十三天の神々を導きながら、次の偈を唱えた。「われと同じくあらんと欲する者は、十四日・十五日、および半月ごとの第八日と、半月ごとの特別な祭日に、八つの徳目を完備した布薩を守るべし」と。
しかしながら、比丘たちよ、神々の主たる帝釈天が唱えたこの偈は、巧みに歌われたものではなく、善く歌われたものでもない。巧みに説かれたものではなく、善く説かれたものでもない。それはなぜか。神々の主たる帝釈天は、いまだ再生と老いより解脱していないからである。
