Then Venerable Sāriputta went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Maybe I’ll teach Dhamma in brief, maybe in detail, maybe both in brief and in detail. But it’s hard to find anyone who understands.” “Now is the time, Blessed One! Now is the time, Holy One! Let the Buddha teach Dhamma in brief, in detail, and both in brief and in detail. 時に、尊者サーリプッタは世尊のもとへと参り、礼拝して一方に坐した。世尊はかれに仰せられた。「わたしは、あるいは略して法を説き、あるいは詳しく法を説き、あるいは略しても詳しくも法を説くであろう。されど、それを理解する者を見出すことは難しい。」
「今こそその時にございます、世尊よ。今こそその時にございます、善逝よ。願わくば世尊は、略しても詳しくも、また略しても詳しくも法を説きたまえ。教えを理解する者たちが必ずやあらわれるでしょう。」
「されば、サーリプッタよ、汝はかくのごとく修行すべし。『我執を生ぜず、我が物という執著を生ぜず——』」
