この世には三種の人が存在する。「いつの日か、刹帝利たちも我を王として灌頂するであろう」と望む者――これを「望みなき人」と呼ぶ。
三種とは何か。望みなき人、望みある人、そして望みを断ち切った人である。
では比丘たちよ、望みなき人とはいかなる者か。それは、賤しき家系に生を受けた者のことである――屍を扱う者、竹細工を営む者、猟師、車大工、あるいは清掃夫の家柄に生まれた者であり、貧しく、飲食にも事欠き、暮らしは困窮を極め、食と住を得ることもままならない境遇にある者のことである。
