At Sāvatthī. When he said this, Sakka said to him, ‘Vepacitti, you are the elder gods here. Recite a verse.’ So Vepacitti spoke this verse: “Once upon a time, mendicants, a battle was fought between the gods and the titans. Then Vepacitti, lord of titans, said to Sakka, lord of gods, ‘Lord of gods, let there be victory by fine words!’ ‘Vepacitti, let there be victory by fine words!’ Then the gods and the titans appointed a panel of judges, saying, ‘These will understand our good and bad statemen
舎衛城にて。かく語りし時、帝釈天はヴェーパチッティに告げた。「ヴェーパチッティよ、汝はここにおける神々の長老なり。一偈を誦せよ。」かくしてヴェーパチッティは次の偈を説いた。「比丘たちよ、かつて神々と阿修羅との間に戦闘が起こりました。その時、阿修羅の主ヴェーパチッティは、神々の主たる帝釈天に申しました。『天主よ、善き言葉によって勝利が決せられんことを！』帝釈天は答えました。『ヴェーパチッティよ、善き言葉によって勝利が決せられんことを！』かくして神々と阿修羅は審判団を設けて言いました。『この者たちが、我らの発言の優劣を判定するであろう』と。
