At one time Venerable Nāgadatta was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove. Now at that time Venerable Nāgadatta had been entering the village too early and returning late in the day. Then the deity haunting that forest had sympathy for Nāgadatta, wanting what’s best for him. So they approached him wanting to stir him up, and recited these verses: “Entering the village too early, and returning too late in the day, Nāgadatta mixes with lay people, sharing their joys and sor
あるとき、尊者ナーガダッタはコーサラ国のある林苑に滞在しておられた。その頃、尊者ナーガダッタは早すぎる時刻に村へ入り、日も暮れてから遅く帰ってくることを繰り返しておられた。そこで、その林に住む神霊が、ナーガダッタを憐れみ、その利益を願う心から、彼を奮い起こさんと近づき、次の偈を唱えた。「あまりに早く村へ入り、あまりに遅く帰り来る。ナーガダッタよ、汝は在家の者たちと交わり、その喜びと悲しみをともにしている——」
