At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Āḷavī, at Āḷavī’s premier shrine, together with his mentor, Venerable Nigrodhakappa. Now at that time after Venerable Nigrodhakappa had finished his meal, on his return from almsround, he would enter his dwelling and not emerge for the rest of that day, or the next. あるとき、尊者ヴァンギーサは、師である尊者ニグローダカッパとともに、アーラヴィーの最勝なる霊廟のほとりに、アーラヴィーの近くに滞在していた。その頃、尊者ニグローダカッパは、托鉢より戻り食事を終えると、その日の残りの時を、そして翌日も、房舎に入りてついに出でることがなかった。そのような折、尊者ヴァンギーサの心に愛欲が染み入り、彼は不満足に陥った。そこで彼はかく思った。「これは実に我が損失、我が不幸なることよ。愛欲が心に浸透し、かくも不満足に堕してしまったとは。」
