At Sāvatthī. Then a brahmin almsman went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha, “Worthy Gotama, both you and I are almsmen. 舎衛城にての事なり。時に、一人のバラモンの托鉢修行者が仏陀のもとに近づき、挨拶を交わした。挨拶と礼儀ある言葉が終わると、彼は傍らに座し、仏陀にこう申し上げた。「尊き瞿曇よ、あなたも私も、ともに托鉢を行ずる者。されば、我らの間にいかなる差異がありましょうや。」
仏陀は答えられた。「ただ他者に乞食するのみにては、真の乞食者とはなり得ぬ。世俗の務めを担い続ける者は、いまだ真の沙門とは言えぬ。されど、功徳と悪業の両を断ち捨て、梵行を修め、正智をもって遊行する者こそ……」
