At Sāvatthī. Now at that time a brahmin named Contraphile, who loved contradiction, was residing in Sāvatthī. Then Contraphile thought, “Why don’t I go to the ascetic Gotama and contradict everything he says?” At that time the Buddha was walking mindfully in the open air. サーヴァッティーにて。その時、ヴィロードハカという名の婆羅門が、矛盾を愛し、反論することを好む者として、サーヴァッティーに住んでいた。そこでヴィロードハカはこのように思った。「沙門ゴータマのもとへ赴き、かの者の説くことすべてに反論してやろうではないか。」その時、世尊は露天にて正念を保ちながら経行しておられた。するとヴィロードハカ婆羅門は世尊のもとへ近づき、経行中の世尊に向かってこう言った。「沙門よ、法を説かれよ。」「反論を好む者には、善き言葉も容易には理解されぬ。その心が汚濁に染まり、瞋恚に満ちている限りは。」
