At one time the Buddha was staying in the Kosalan lands on the bank of the Sundarikā river. “Even some brahmins are shaven. Why don’t I go to him and ask about his birth?” Now at that time the brahmin Bhāradvāja of Sundarikā was serving the sacred flame and performing the fire sacrifice on the bank of the Sundarikā. かつて、仏陀はコーサラ国のスンダリカー河畔に滞在されていた。「剃髪した者の中にも婆羅門がいる。あの方のもとへ赴き、その生まれについて尋ねてみようではないか。」その頃、スンダリカーの婆羅門バーラドヴァージャは、スンダリカー河畔において聖火に奉仕し、火祀を修していた。やがて彼は四方を見渡し、「さて、この供物の残りを受けるにふさわしい者は誰であろうか」と思いを巡らせた。すると彼は、仏陀がある樹の根元において、衣を頭から被り禅定に入っておられる姿を見出した。
