At one time the Buddha was staying between a pair of sal trees in the sal forest of the Mallas at Upavattana near Kusinārā at the time of his full extinguishment. Then the Buddha said to the mendicants: “Come now, mendicants, I say to you all: ‘Conditions fall apart. あるとき、世尊はクシナーラーの近くウパヴァッタナにあるマッラ族の沙羅林において、双樹の間に坐しておられた。それは世尊が般涅槃に入られる時のことであった。そのとき、世尊は比丘たちにこう告げられた。
「さあ、比丘たちよ、汝らに告げる。『諸行は壊滅するものである。不放逸を以て精進せよ』と。」
これが如来最後の御言葉であった。
「心揺るぎなき無漏の聖者には、もはや呼吸なく。動じることなく、寂静に住し、明眼の方は完全に涅槃に入られたり。苦痛をも耐え忍びたまいし……」
