So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī. There he addressed the mendicants, “Mendicants!” “Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this: Whoever shall meditate diligently in this teaching and training, giving up transmigration through rebirths, will make an end of suffering.” That’s what we heard, sir.’ ‘Good, good, mendicants! It’s good that you heard the mendicant Abhibhū speaking this verse while standing in a realm of divinity.’” That is what the Buddha said.
かくのごとく、我は聞けり。あるとき、世尊はサーヴァッティーの近くに滞在しておられた。そこで世尊は比丘たちに告げて言われた。「比丘たちよ。」「世尊よ。」と比丘たちは答えた。世尊はかく仰せられた。「この教えと修行において、精進を以て瞑想し、輪廻転生を捨て去る者は、苦の滅尽に至るであろう。」「まさにそのように聞き及びました、世尊よ。」「善いかな、善いかな、比丘たちよ。比丘アビブーが天界に住しつつ、この偈を説くのを汝らがよく聞き受けたことは、誠に善きことである。」と世尊は仰せられた。
これぞ世尊の説かれたまいし御言葉なり。
