So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain, not long after Devadatta had left. Then, late at night, the glorious divinity Sahampati, lighting up the entire Vulture’s Peak, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: “The banana plant is destroyed by its own fruit, as are the bamboo and the reed. Honor destroys a reprobate, as pregnancy destroys a mule.”
このように私は聞けり。あるとき世尊は、デーヴァダッタが去りて間もなく、ラージャガハの近く、鷲峰山に滞在しておられた。その夜更け、光り輝く梵天サハンパティが鷲峰山をあまねく照らしながら世尊のもとへと近づき、礼拝して傍らに立ち、世尊の御前にてこの偈を説いた。「芭蕉は己の果実によりて滅び、竹もまた葦もしかり。名誉は卑劣な者を滅ぼし、懐妊が騾馬を滅ぼすがごとく。」
