At Sāvatthī. Then the nun Selā robed up in the morning … and sat at the root of a tree for the day’s meditation. Then Māra the Wicked, wanting to make the nun Selā feel fear, terror, and goosebumps … addressed her in verse: “Who created this puppet? Where is its maker? Where has the puppet arisen? And where does it cease?” Then the nun Selā thought, “Who’s speaking this verse, a human or a non-human?” Then she thought, “This is Māra the Wicked, wanting to make me feel fear, terror, and goosebump
舎衛城にて。時に、尼僧セーラーは、朝に衣を整え……日中の禅定のために、一樹の根元に座した。
その時、悪魔マーラは、尼僧セーラーに恐怖と戦慄と身の毛のよだつ思いを起こさせんと欲して……偈をもって彼女に語りかけた。
「この傀儡を造りしは誰ぞや。その造り手は何処にあるや。この傀儡は何処より生じ、また何処において滅するや。」
時に、尼僧セーラーはこのように思念した。「この偈を語りかけるは、人間か、それとも非人か。」
さらに彼女はこのように思念した。「これはすなわち悪魔マーラにして、我に恐怖と戦慄と身の毛のよだつ思いを起こさせんと欲するものなり。」
