Sāvatthinidānaṁ. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhūnaṁ nibbānapaṭisaṁyuttāya dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti. Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti. Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi: mameva, samaṇa, ghānaṁ, mama gandhā; mameva, samaṇa, jivhā, mama rasā; mameva, samaṇa, kāyo, mama phoṭṭhabbā; mameva, samaṇa, mano, mama dhammā, mama manosamphassaviññāṇāyatanaṁ. Kuhiṁ me, samaṇa, gantvā mokkhasī”ti? “ayaṁ
At Sāvatthī. Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment. And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. 舎衛城にての事なり。その折、世尊は比丘たちに涅槃について法を説き、励まし、奮い立たせ、歓喜せしめておられた。そして比丘たちは心を傾け、意を注ぎ、一心に集中し、真摯に聴聞していた。 その時、悪魔マーラはかく思った。「鼻よ……舌よ……身よ……意よ、我のものは諸々の法境、我のものは意触所生の識の領域。沙門よ、汝いずこへ逃れんとするのか」と。「沙門ゴータマは涅槃について法を説き……そして比丘たちは……」
